What makes a brand perform?
A new brand intelligence system built from decades of global experience—and designed to make every brand decision count.
After decades of working with brands across South Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, the Nordics and Europe, I found myself considering what to do next.
I explored promising startups. I entertained the idea of a novel, a B&B, even learning a new trade. I tried a few different directions. I’m an entrepreneur as well as a brand person; curiosity was never going to let me sit quietly and contemplate the sunset.
But I kept coming back to brands.
In almost every part of life, someone has devoted years to understanding the finer points of their craft. Mine is branding. And the longer I’ve worked in it, the more I’ve come to appreciate how difficult it is to build a strong brand—and how much harder it can be to preserve one.
Behind many brands is a deeply human endeavour. Someone saw a way to make a product more useful, a process more effective or an everyday experience better. People committed their knowledge, money, energy and reputations to making it real. That effort deserves to be understood. It deserves a brand capable of carrying its value into the world.
Yet a business changes. New products arrive. Teams grow. Markets interpret things differently. A benefit that was once obvious to its creators becomes harder for everyone else to see. Good intentions can produce many individually convincing expressions that no longer add up to one clear brand.
I can’t quite bring myself to walk away from that challenge. I want to pass on what I’ve learned and help nurture brands that will be stronger for the future.
Today, there is an extraordinary opportunity to do that work. AI lets me research, connect evidence, test possibilities and refine decisions at a depth and speed I could not have imagined ten years ago without an office full of people. Combined with decades of commercial and cultural experience, it gives me a far more precise way to find a brand’s strongest performance baseline—and keep calibrating the work against it.
That baseline asks important questions. What does this business stand for? Which benefits genuinely matter? What makes them credible? How should the brand look, sound and behave across products, markets and cultures? And how do we protect those answers as the business moves?
That is why I’ve devised the Global Brand Writer™ brand intelligence system: Commercial & Cultural Intelligence for Brand Leadership. It brings my experience and AI intelligence into a simple, precise framework for defining, refining and governing brand marketing with clarity and consistency.
Brand GP™ — Independent Brand Governance
Establish what the brand means and keep its decisions aligned.
Product GP™ — The Living Product Intelligence Engine
Make complex product value clear, current and connected to the brand.
Campaign GP™ — Intelligence in Market
Turn that intelligence into distinctive work people can recognise and respond to.
We begin wherever the need is greatest. For a CEO, that may be the direction of the whole brand. For a marketing director, it may be the consistency of what reaches the market. For a product leader, it may be helping people understand the value the business has worked so hard to create.
I’ve spent my life learning the finer parts of this craft. I’m still learning, still building and still convinced that better brands can make business—and everyday life—better.
The adventure continues. Join me for the ride.
